Hey
Guys:
Was
in your Hog Heaven last Tuesday, the 11th of March (2008)
with my
son
and I complimented the lady about how good the BBQ was.
And
that is a fact.
Like I said, I was stationed in eastern North
Carolina
for four years and sampled all the BBQ Rest. and they
could
not touch what I ate at yours on Tuesday.
My
wife and I are planning on coming over from the Valley, 70
miles,
to have lunch/dinner one day.
Looking forward to it.......
BF
Dear
Editor:
(for The HOOK)
I
told my next-door neighbor that I knew of a gourmet barbecue restaurant in the
area, and she said she thought "gourmet barbecue" was an oxymoron.
It's okay -- she's from New York.
It
has been a kind of accidental hobby of mine to sample barbecue all over this
land of ours, and the food at Hog Heaven in Ruckersville is easily, by far, the
best I've ever had.
For many years, Hog Heaven was in the Belmont area of Charlottesville where it
was barely clinging to life.
Then, by a stroke of back-handed luck, the owner, Mark Cermele, lost his lease
and had to find another location.
He told me that at his new location in Ruckersville, he now does the business in
one day that he used to do in a week in Charlottesville -- and he has plans to
expand his dining area at some point.
I'm
writing this as a public service to anyone who is not a vegan and has not tried
Hog Heaven.
The restaurant is a lot like the movie Pirates
of the Caribbean.
"Hmm," you wonder.
The movie gives you virtually every element of what you'd expect to find in a
pirate movie, but makes it all fresh and original.
Hog Heaven does that with barbecue.
With every offering of smoked meats, homade sauces, and side dishes there is a
truly original, gourmet take on it.
So it's familiar, if you love barbecue joints, but it's also an amazing new
experience.
Even the french fries are like no other I've ever had; in fact they've spoiled
me for fries served anywhere else!
And speaking of "barbecue
joints," even though the new surroundings for Hog Heaven are bright and
clean, it hasn't lost its real
honest-to-goodness southern
barbecue joint ambience.
First of all, it's a little hard to find -- it's
"around back," and it's in Ruckersville (15 minutes from
Charlottesville).
Second, it's filled with a growing collection of pig kitsch -- figurines,
plaques with hog humor, pictures, etc.
Third, the clientele is people who appreciate good, down-home food; although I
went in one afternoon to find the place filled with a motorcycle gang.
That was a little unusual, but I think they mistook the place for Hawg Heaven.
Anyway, they were having a good time.
It's not only great barbecue, it's some of the best food in the world.
Sincerely,
KL
